(2014) ★★

Film4: PREMIERE Saturday 19 December, 11.05pm

Hard-drinking deputy Leo Fafard emerges from yet another blackout with a pentagram carved into his chest and a disturbing allergy to full moons. The sheriff’s department in Woodhaven will never be the same again.

Fafard’s boozy cop Lou Garou (‘loup-garou’ is French for werewolf, heh-heh) is Teen Wolf with a tin badge. There’s a rap to rub it in. Like Garou’s name, the jokes are up-front and obvious – fuzz-faced Lou takes out three robbers wearing pig masks – in a gory Canadian spoof that falls some way short of the genuinely provocative Vancouver horror Ginger Snaps (which is acknowledged in a reference to Bailey Downs, its fictional setting).

While obviously made with fanboy affection for the genre, it likewise doesn’t measure up to Nick Damici’s more awkwardly comical Late Phases (aka Night of the Wolf), made over the border in New York’s Hudson Valley. Writer-director Lowell Dean is already shooting WolfCop 2.
