Four Christmases

(2008) ★★★

Channel 4: Sunday 20 December, 11.00pm

After enduring Hollywood’s ‘festive fare’ in recent years – the likes of Surviving Christmas, Christmas With the Kranks (or anything else with Tim Allen in it), not to mention Vince Vaughn’s Fred Claus – expectations couldn’t be great for another Vince Vaughn holiday comedy so soon after the abysmal Couples Retreat. Oh, ye of little faith. The executive producer here is Peter Billingsley, the actor who, as a boy, starred in Bob Clark’s charming Canadian comedy, A Christmas Story.

(He takes a bit part here, as a ticket agent.) Denied their usual Christmas getaway, selfish San Francisco couple Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon are forced to divide the day between four families, because both sets of parents are divorced: his mom and dad are Sissy Spacek and Robert Duvall, hers are Mary Steenburgen and Jon Voight. That’s a classy cast for a festive offering that doesn’t outstay its welcome. The predictable shift towards pathos near the end is regrettable, but there are plenty of sour laughs along the way. In fact, it’s the funniest Xmas horror show since National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and you can’t say crueller than that.
