Sky Movies Christmas: Tursday 22 December, 6.00pm and 21.45pm

Vince Vaughn as Fred Claus, Santa’s resentful blacksheep brother, who’s summoned back to the North Pole. No ho-ho in an insincerely sentimental comedy from Wedding Crashers star Vaughn and director David Dobkin, reuniting here to put the blah into humbug. It wants to be a family-friendly cross between Billy Bob Thornton’s Bad Santa and Will Ferrell’s Elf, but it doesn’t even measure up to Tim Allen’s so-so Santa Clause series. Paul Giamatti is padded up as Santa and Ludacris pops up, too, as DJ Donnie. That sounds about right.

Like the ninja elves. Boy, they’re hilarious. Or the Patty Hearst and Jerry Garcia references. That’ll go over big in Palookaville. This really is the worst type of ‘family’ movie: too boring for grownups, too confusing for children (Santa’s workshop is being sized up by Kevin Spacey for South Pole outsourcing)… and it blunders around like a headless turkey for nigh on two hours. The direction is amazingly poor.

I’ve never seen such inept use of widescreen. Dobkin barely seems to know where to point the camera. Even the actors seem to be aware of the Christmas turkey they’re stuck with. The only vaguely amusing scene is the Siblings Anonymous meeting. But what the hell’s that doing in a kids’ movie? The awful end credits song is Ludacrismas (sampling Doris Day’s Here Comes Santa Claus), produced and performed by Ludacris. Some talent. Somebody please get me a one-way ticket for The Polar Express.
