Stuart Little

(1999) ★★★

Film4:Tuesday 29 December, 11.00am

Michael J. Fox provides the voice for stout-hearted mouse Stuart Little in a digitally animated children’s comedy based on the book by Charlotte’s Web author E.B. White. There are real people in it too: Stuart’s adopted parents are Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie, while cute kid Jonathan Lipnicki proves he’s got the corner on cute-kid roles following his appearance alongside Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire. He played the cute kid.

It’s a Christmas card kind of picture, a snuggle-up story of considerable charm, with most of the smiles coming from the cutely cast voices for the animals. Nathan Lane is especially funny as the Little family’s prissy and petulant white cat Snowbell: “Stay away from the windows. If the other cats find out about this I’m ruined.” It was co-scripted by M. Night Shyamalan, hence the banging on about fairy tales. The 2002 sequel follows at 12.40pm. But it should come as no surprise that a Stuart Little sequel offers diminished returns.
