Channel 4: PREMIERE Wednesday 30 December, 4.35pm
Soldier boys George MacKay and Kevin Guthrie happy to be home in Edinbugh after an Afghan tour. Tartan army musical from Wild Bill director Dexter Fletcher, the London-born actor who’s a familiar face in the likes of Lock/Stock and Layer Cake. He made his debut as a 10-year-old playing Baby Face in Alan Parker’s 1976 splurge-gun pastiche Bugsy Malone, which is likely where Fletcher got a taste for cream pies and songs on screen.
Adapted from a stage play popular in Dundee, it’s quaintly amateurish, preferable to Stuart Murdoch’s prissy Strathclyde musical God Help the Girl. It helps if you like the songs of The Proclaimers.
