Sky Movies Drama: Wednesday 6 January, 12.15pm
Tender-hearted burglar Colin Farrell falls for New York heiress Jessica Brown Findlay, confined with consumption. Angels and demons in a dance of destiny spanning a century. We are all made of stars, Moby sang sweetly and sappily in a four-minute ditty.
This grim fairy tale – the directorial debut of Ron Howard’s favourite screenwriter, Akiva Goldman (A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, The Da Vinci Code) – frets away at the same theme for two hours. Beautifully photographed by Black Stallion veteran Caleb Deschanel, it’s as bright and shiny as Benjamin Button.
And just as dim. A kind of Cloud Atlas writ small, romantic and sappy about serious illness. It could be mistaken for a children’s film but Russell Crowe’s in it, wearing a scowl and a scar.
