Assisted by inexperienced attorney Ryan Reynolds, octogenarian Jewish refugee Helen Mirren wants the Austrian government held accountable for the return of artwork seized in Vienna before WWII. Specifically Gustav Klimt’s 1907 painting of her aunt, Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, otherwise known as ‘The Lady in Gold’.

The US Supreme Court will become embroiled in a legal battle staged by My Week With Marilyn director Simon Curtis as a paint-by-numbers courtroom drama. An unnecessary reliance on heart-tugging suggests Maria Altmann’s complicated true story has been heavily fictionalised.

The labyrinthine legal case has certainly been given a warped timeline, and the scenes that work best are the flashbacks to Vienna in the 30s. Mirren’s imperious, as ever, but even playing around with a strudel accent she cannot add much spice to the spoon-feeding script. This is a film that favours sentimentality over any recognition of anti-Semitism.

Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey’s Lady Grantham) cameos briefly late on as a judge. In real life, she’s married to the director.
