Liam Neeson always knew his sins would catch up with him. After his Walk Among the Tombstones here he is, flat on his back, in a bit of a state. With a bullet in his side. We’re going to see how this happened. Commanding the screen with his moody authority, Liam’s a burned-out hit man once known to NYPD’s homicide division as ‘Jimmy the Gravedigger’.

He’s still on the payroll of childhood friend Ed Harris, a Brooklyn mobster with a son who’s a lethal liability. But the only thing Liam’s hitting is the bottle. Until his own estranged son, limo driver Joel Kinnaman, is targeted by Harris’ crazy coke-addled boy, Boyd Holbrook. Liam shoots him dead. And gives chase when bent cops ‘arrest’ Kinnaman, who doesn’t realise how lucky he is to have Liam as a dad. A lifetime’s loyalty and friendship flushed down the toilet, Harris hires contract killer Common: “Make sure you kill the son first.” Following Unknown and Non-Stop, this is the third Neeson action pic directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, and it’s almost the charm.

It’s a solid job punctuated by a couple of big set-pieces – a white knuckle car chase, a tower block hide-and-seek – but a reliance on flashy ‘Google Map’ camera-pans makes the film look more frivolous than it actually is. Neeson, as ever, has real presence and there’s a gravitas to the scenes shared with Ed Harris and Vincent D’Onofrio, which helps to overcome the plot’s glaring coincidences. Young Holbrook stands out, too, playing a far nastier variation on the junkie who spins Neeson a yarn in A Walk Among the Tombstones. Talking of junkies, the music’s by Junkie XL, whose real name is Tom Holkenborg. Like his Mad Max: Fury Road score, it runs all film.
