There’s something that has never quite sat right with Friends fans; the fact that Phoebe and Joey never officially hooked up. While Ross and Rachel enjoyed the most on-again off-again romantic saga in sitcom history before Monica and Chandler shocked everyone by becoming pretty much the perfect couple, Joey and Phoebe didn’t hook up, despite the fact they were perfect for each other.

However, now we know that the actors themselves were really open about it eventually happening, as Matt LeBlanc explained below.

“Towards the end we actually pitched the idea that Joey and Phoebe had been having casual sex the entire time,” he told People magazine.

“We’d go back and shoot all the historical scenes and just before a moment that everyone recognises, there’s Joey and Phoebe coming out of a broom closet together. But they were like, ‘Nah’.”

LeBlanc reacted excitedly to news this week that a Friends cast reunion would be happening in February for a tribute special to director James Burrows.

“Should be a good time!” he tweeted, after NBC announced that “all six stars” would be “in the same room together” again.

However, the happiness was short-lived as Matthew Perry’s representative confirmed on Friday that he would not be making an appearance due to rehearsals for his new play in London. Add to that, David Schwimmer confirmed it wasn’t a reunion and explained he would just be ‘showing up.’ Way to wreck the fun, Ross.

They’re certainly not going to be there for us. As for Phoebe and Joey, it’s disappointing that they decided not to pursue the idea, especially considering they greenlit the worst storyline in Friends’ history with Joey falling in love with Rachel.

That was a desperate attempt to arrest the declining ratings towards the last couple of seasons, when they really should have just showed a lot more of Joey tackling gargantuan amounts of turkey single-handed.
