With perfectly coiffured cornrows adorning his barnet, freed slave Stanley Weber is the Shadow Walker, an exiled prince bent on vengeance in 11th century Britain. Treacherous uncle Karel Roden is the man he’s after. Standing in his way, William the Conqueror’s Norman forces. As luck would have it, Annabelle Wallis is among the angry northern farmers also up in arms against Roden’s ruthless rule.
From the writer behind the dreadful Hammer of the Gods, another dismal slice-and-dice that fancies itself as some kind of kin to Nicolas Winding Refn’s striking Viking fantasia, Valhalla Rising. But it’s more like a video game outline than a real movie, a muddy morass of dead-in-its-tracks slow-motion and attention-deficit quick cuts amid the blood spurts. Everything’s rendered in the kind of desaturated colour tones that can’t be blamed solely on the boring Serbian locations.
