Star Wars: The Force Awakens may have come and gone but this is still a very exciting time for fans of the revived franchise. Not only are we faced with the tantalising prospect of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story being released in December, Episode VIII is currently filming and we’re being fed little strands and tidbits of the story each week.
According to Making Star Wars, who really earn their stripes during the developmental process of Star Wars films because of their near-irrefutable sources (they’ve proven to be extremely accurate in the past), Rian Johnson’s upcoming sequel will give us a first glimpse at what a casino looks like in a galaxy far, far away.
A scene is currently being filmed in Dubrovnik, Croatia that includes a rather large space casino, but the reporter has not received word whether the entire planet is a casino or just a location known for gambling.
Jason Ward, the site’s editor-in-chief, speculates that an earlier glimpse of some people dressed in formal wear could have been gambling. Also, if you look at some of the previously released set photos, the arched lighting does have a casino aesthetic to it.
According to Ward, the scene will bear a striking resemblance to the Cantina sequence from A New Hope, as plenty of aliens appear to be present. It will feature Luke Skywalker walking around the casino looking for someone – we’re not sure who exactly – much like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke entering the Cantina in A New Hope looking for a pilot to take them to Alderaan, before eventually hiring a certain smuggler and his Wookie companion.
If this information is accurate and Luke Skywalker is indeed journeying through a casino, it would certainly make for an intriguing and potentially funny scene in Episode VIII, with a more than subtle nod to the scene that introduced us to Han Solo.
Making Star Wars has promised more information in the coming days so we’ll be sure to keep you updated about anything interesting that finds its way through. In the meantime, watch our video below detailing how Episode VIII will pick up from The Force Awakens.
