Alex Garland’s Ex Machina was one of 2015’s surprise hits. The highly inventive and original sci-fi thriller was buoyed by an excellent script and the captivating central performances from Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson and Oscar Isaac. Now, Isaac is reteaming with Garland for an equally intriguing sci-fi concept, an adaptation of the novel Annihilation.
According to The Tracking Board, which already boasts a star-studded cast including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez and Natalie Portman, Isaac will play Portman’s husband, with Portman serving as the narrator.
Oscar Issac’s assumed role would be that of a member of the 11th expedition that was sent into the wilderness of Annihilation’s Area X. Serving as the expedition before the 12th team that includes Natalie Portman’s biologist, the 11th team came back with a slight case of amnesia, as well as a rapid onset of cancer, thus greatly complicating the relationship.
Garland’s vision and talent as a sci-fi director coupled with Isaac and Portman as a powerful on-screen duo is a tantalising prospect. The complicated nature between their characters would afford Portman and Issac the opportunity to really felx their dramatic muscles.
If it’s adapted well, Annihilation could achieve the same level of success as Ex Machina.
