Jared Leto has broken his silence and spoken about playing The Joker in Suicide Squad, saying the legacy of the Clown Prince of Crime is “a very special thing to take on.”
If there’s one performance we’re really looking forward to this summer, it’s Jared Leto’s new take on The Joker in Suicide Squad.
The Oscar winner will put a different spin on the clown prince of crime and, judging by what we’ve seen in the trailers, it’s going to be a performance to remember.
Leto has opened up about his approach to playing such a famous character. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he said he was yet to formulate a lot of his thoughts on the character but realised what big shoes he is expected to fill.
The Joker last appeared on our screens in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, played by the late Heath Ledger, whose brilliantly deranged portrayal earned him a posthumous Oscar.
“The work that’s been done on this character by so many people before me has been so impactful and incredible,” Leto explained. “It’s a very special thing to take on that responsibility.”
Leto felt that he had to do something different, determined to make this version his own but was excited to redefine a character with such a rich history.
He added: “It a weighty thing to do, but it’s exciting. The Joker is one of those roles. He was written brilliantly when he was first shared with the world 75 years ago and I think I’m just really grateful I had the opportunity.”
It looks as though Leto has really taken this role seriously and we’re certain he’s going to give us a Joker to savour. Now, all we need is confirmation that he’ll appear in Batman’s solo movie.
