With the MCU in full swing, it’s unusual that we still haven’t seen the arrival of a film with a female lead front and centre. Sure we’ll be seeing more of Hope van Dyne in Ant-Man & The Wasp, and Captain Marvel is on the way in 2019, this will hopefully be the start of a new wave of comic book movies. Let’s look at the 10 female Marvel superhero movies we need on the big screen.
1. Black Widow
With Joss Whedon hinting that he’d like to return some day to make a female-fronted Marvel flick, one would imagine he would like to work with a character he had helped develop. And with a lot of buzz around a Black Widow solo flick being a priority for Marvel, we’d love to see such a team up. More Scarlett Johansson in the MCU please.
2. Scarlet Witch
Speaking of characters already established in the MCU, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda is a force to be reckoned with. A relative newcomer, her introduction in Age of Ultron and further development in Civil War have only left us craving more. We’d also love it if the character was to make her long-awaited appearance in the X-Men franchise.
Cousin to Bruce Banner, a life-saving blood transfusion with him gave Jennifer Walters her super size and strength, but thankfully makes her easier on the eyes than her big green cousin (unless you’re into that, we’re not judging). Having a long history in teams like The Avengers and as a solo powerhouse, she could have one hell of a fun film.
There were rumours that we were going to see her in Apocalypse, but the post credit scene seems to be the closest we get… for now. A attempt at the Weapon X project, X-23 is imprinted with everything that makes Logan a badass. That in itself has to be a reason to give her a movie.
Oh, alternative realities. We love em, and in comics they’re as common as super powered teenagers dressing up in Halloween costumes and fighting crime. In this relatively new story, Gwen Stacy is the one bitten by the radioactive arachnid, not Peter, turning her into Spider-Gwen! What’s even cooler is the twists on classic Spidey characters, such as having one of Peter’s experiments having him transformed into The Lizard.
We know what you’re saying; “But we already have a Hawkeye! And he’s boring! And a dude!” Well, fans of the comics have been treated to a much different story, especially in Matt Fraction’s glorious run on Hawkeye, which sees the oddball pairing of Hawkeye (Clint Barton) and Hawkeye (Kate Bishop). It’s glorious, and you should read it, and Marvel should make it into a movie.
7. Black Cat
It felt like we were very close to having Black Cat appear on the big screen, with Felicity Jones’ character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 being called Felicia. Comic fans easily joined the dots, with this nodding to Felicia Hardy, the world famous cat burglar and sometimes partner of Spidey. A new webslinger in Tom Holland means a new chance at seeing her, but we can’t help but wonder what could have been with Miss Jones…
8. Silver Sable
There’s something about this list and women who have had run ins with Spider-Man. The mercenary and bounty hunter Silver Sable. A bit of an anti-hero, her methods may be questionable, but she certainly gets the job done. We’d kill to see her paired up with Black Widow.
