Game of Thrones has never been afraid to bend away from George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire narrative. It does it all the time. However, one of the most disappointing divergences from page to screen has been the exclusion of Lady Stoneheart, the vengeful reincarnation of Catelyn Stark.

In the novels, Catelyn’s body is found after the Red Wedding by the Brotherhood without Banners. Beric Dondarrion bends over and kisses Catelyn’s cold lips, sacrificing himself for good so she could be resurrected as the revenge-driven Stoneheart.

However, the show didn’t quite work it like that and, despite persistent rumours of an appearance, Lady Stoneheart has never returned to exact revenge on Walder Frey and the traitors of Riverlands. Season six has returned to the scene of the Red Wedding, which prompted speculation that this would finally be the season. But don’t get your hopes up…

During Balticon last week, a YouTuber managed to ask George RR Martin a question about the character, asking if she was ever going to appear on the show. Martin said no, that it had been discussed several times before and that she had been cut.

So, unfortunately, showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss don’t look to be planning on bringing in Lady Stoneheart anytime soon. It’s pretty disappointing, but it does trigger the question: what will become of Walder Frey and the Riverlands? We’re eager to find out. Walder definitely has his comeuppance coming to him. We hope it’s brutal and merciless, quite like how he sipped his drink and smirked as his sons cut the throats of Robb and Catelyn Stark, while murdering the unborn baby of the King of the North.
