Despite the Marvel Cinematic Universe slate proposing exciting upcoming titles like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Thor: Ragnarok and Black Panther, our eyes are firmly fixated on Tom Holland’s solo debut as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

After his well-received debut in Captain America: Civil War, Holland will front the first Spidey movie in the MCU and the film has been steadily assembling an impressive cast. The latest piece of casting news really hit home with hardcore Marvel fans, with news that Community and The Martian star Donald Glover is joining Homecoming in an unspecified role.

However, while reports didn’t hint at who he could be playing, many fans have started a ferocious rumour mill that Glover will be portraying Miles Morales, the Ultimate Universe version of Spider-Man. Essentially, if this is true, it means Marvel are planning on bringing multiple versions of Spider-Man to the big-screen at the one time which, to fans, is a tantalising prospect indeed.

Glover as Miles Morales

Glover had been circling Spider-Man for a long time. A few years back, a massive fanboy campaign started online urging Sony to cast him in The Amazing Spider-Man reboot, before the studio eventually opted for Andrew Garfield. However, Glover has been providing the voice for Miles Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated TV show, so the speculation about his role in Homecoming seems like a natural progression considering his connection.

Parker and Morales have come across one another in the comics, so there’s an origin for the MCU to bring us more than one Spidey at the same time. It would certainly make it distinct among the Spider-Man movies we’ve already had with Tobey Maguire and Garfield.

The biggest deal-breaker is that Glover is 32, much older than Morales. Either he’s playing a slightly older version of the character or he’s playing Miles’s dad or uncle, who are both a presence in the comics.

We’re really starting to feel that the MCU will launch the Spider-verse and that could potentially pave the way for a Spider-Man army fighting alongside the Avengers and the Guardians in a bid to defeat Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

We will have to wait and see when Spider-Man: Homecoming drops on July 7, 2017.
