HBO executives are pinning their hopes on Westworld, the new 10-part series that is expected to fill the dragon-sized hole in the network’s schedule once Game of Thrones is finished. There’s been a lot of talk lately that HBO hasn’t made an original show on par with Thrones since it premiered in 2010, but Westworld looks as likely as any to become a spiritual successor and global phenomenon.

Now ssshh, let’s watch the really intense trailer:

So yeah, it looks pretty terrifying. If you don’t know what the hell is going on, let us try and unpack: it’s billed as a dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness, set in the eponymous Westworld, a futuristic theme park packed with human-like automatons. It’s a series-length reimagining of the 1973 film of the same name, directed by Jurassic Park author Michael Crichton.

Weswtworld will premiere on Sky Atlantic for UK-based folks in October. It stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Jimmi Simpson, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Simon Quarterman, Angela Sarafyan, Luke Hemsworth and Clifton Collins, Jr in a cast only HBO themselves could assemble.
