One of the biggest mysteries, for fans, in Marvel’s Doctor Strange has been the identity of Mads Mikkelsen’s character. Like most aspects of the film, his villainous character was shroud in secrecy. Even when the first trailer dropped, it was difficult to figure out who he was. Details have been slim and Mikkelsen further added to the enigma when he described his character as not really being a villain the traditional sense, rather a character who merely has differences in philosophy to the titular Sorcerer Supreme.

Well, as we wait for a second trailer to shed more light on the matter, it looks as though a toy set has revealed the identity of Mikkelsen’s character. If you want to stay uninitiated and spoiler-free, we suggest you don’t keep reading (especially if Marvel is waiting for the film to reveal who he’s playing):

It looks like Mikkelsen is playing Kaecilius, a disciple of Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) in the comic books.

Marvel Minimates Series 70 Doctor Strange Movie 2-Pack Asst (as seen above) comes attached with this rather elucidating synopsis:

A Diamond Select Toys Release! The next chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is now the next entry in the long-running Marvel Minimates line! Series 70 of Marvel Minimates mini-figures travels to the world of the Doctor Strange movie, with four different two-packs: Dr. Strange with The Ancient One, Mordo with Kaecilius, the specialty-exclusive Stephen Strange with Christine Palmer and the specialty-exclusive Wong & Zealot! Each 2-inch Minimates mini-figure features 14 points of articulation and fully interchangeable parts. Each two-pack is packaged in a full-color window box.

So, this would lead you to assume that Mikkelsen is in fact the main villain in Doctor Strange. However, this may well be some Marvel sleight of hand, diverting our attention from Baron Mordo, the film’s true villain (he is the most famous villain in the comics after all). Could Mordo be manipulating Kaecilius as he develops his grander villainous plans?

We’ll have to wait until November 3rd to find out, but Marvel has kindly unveiled a new official synopsis for Doctor Strange to keep us ticking over:

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.
