Although Disney and Lucasfilm have been playing their cards very close to their chests over Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, they’ve had no problem in revealing every new character we’ll be introduced to during Gareth Edwards’ spinoff film.

Following the uncertainty and rampant speculation over the heavily-publicised reshoots, Disney probably decided it was time to unveil their big, fluffy Entertainment Weekly cover story, just to reassure die-hard Star Wars fans that all was — and still is — well with Rogue One.

Indeed, in EW’s rundown of the entire cast, they revealed that Forest Whitaker’s bounty hunter, whose voiceover (‘what will you do if they break you?’) we loved in the teaser trailer, is actually playing Rebel fighter Saw Gerrera, who is “so extreme that the other good guys aren’t sure he really is one.”

Saw Gerrera will be well-known to Star Wars ‘completists’ as he appeared in The Clone Wars animated series. In the series, Gerrera is depicted as a brutal and complex character with an aversion to authority, not too dissimilar to Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso.

Rogue One Star WarsIndeed, Saw warns Jyn in the teaser: “If you continue to fight, what will you become?”

“Consider him kind of a battered veteran who leads a band of Rebel extremists,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated. “He’s on the fringe of the Rebel Alliance. Even [they] are a little concerned about him.”

Kennedy also stated that Saw would be an ally to the Rebel squad: “He’s off on his own.”

“The Death Star is the event that sort of pulls everybody into a place of unity, and prior to that it’s a little bit more divided. Who are at the different ends of that spectrum?” stated Kiri Hart, Lucasfilm’s head of story development.

EW also confirmed that Darth Vader will indeed be returning for Rogue One, but we’re not yet sure on the specific details of how he fits into the narrative and whether he will have a major impact. Ben Mendelsohn’s Director Orson Krennic has been confirmed as the main antagonist trying to prevent the Rebels from attaining Death Star plans, with the legendary Sith Lord ‘looming over his shoulder the entire time.’

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits UK cinemas 16 December. Stay tuned to SquareEyed later today as we’ll have some more details on Vader in Rogue One!
