All it took was Star Wars: The Force Awakens to boost the talented John Boyega into the big leagues. Since he took on the role of Finn in the latest installation to the Star Wars franchise he has been offered plenty of high profile roles.
Only a few weeks ago, Deadline reported that had landed the lead role in the Pacific Rim sequel playing the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film which was released in 2013. Now it is reported that he’s also signed on the dotted line and will be starring in Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit Riots film which is yet to be titled. Sounds like someone is in pretty high demand! More to the point, with Bigelow at the helm, could this be Boyega’s big shot at an Oscar?
I’ve teamed up with Kathryn Bigalow for a movie based on the Detroit riots in 1967. #12thstreet

The crime drama, which is currently still without a name, will be written by Mark Boal with Bigelow directing. The film will be set in 1967 Detroit and will document the devastation of the riots that took place over a five day period that summer. The film will depict the systemic racism which took place in urban Detroit.
Both Bigelow and Boal worked together on the Oscar winning film, The Hurt Locker which was released in 2008. The film will also be produced by Megan Ellison who worked with the duo on the 2012 film Zero Dark Thirty which was nominated for five Oscars.

Whilst there is no confirmation on a release date as of yet, it is believed that the film is intended to be released in 2017 to mark the fifty year anniversary of the riots.
In the meantime, Boyega will be keeping himself busy as shooting wraps on Star Wars: Episode VIII. He’ll then be back on our screens playing Kalden in The Circle alongside Emma Watson and Tom Hanks. Meanwhile, he will also appear on stage in London next year starring in Woyzeck at The Old Vic.
